Frequently Asked Questions About Vehicle Transport
We ask that you schedule your move as soon as possible to insure that your car is moved within the time frame which best meets your schedule. However, if you need to move your vehicle immediately, we may be able to accommodate your request. For example, we have terminals in major cities and can usually get a vehicle picked up within 24 hours. You also have the option to drop the vehicle off at a terminal if you cannot wait for the carrier to pickup the vehicle.
In most cases, your vehicle will be transported on an open Car Carrier that transports 8-10 vehicles; the same type of trucks used to deliver new cars to local dealerships. These trucks are 75 to 80 feet long and approximately 14 feet high. Therefore, they are very hard to maneuver and are restricted to main roads that do not have any overhanging trees or low clearance bridges. Please keep this in mind when directing the truck to your pickup or delivery location. A terminal or local service may be used should the car carrier have difficulty reaching your pickup or delivery point. Enclosed Car Carriers offer enhanced protection for your vehicle by providing custom-made air suspension vans and protection from road debris. Most are equipped with Hydraulic lift gates that keep your vehicle horizontal at all times during the loading/unloading process. Lift gate loading minimizes the possibility of undercarriage damage and is strongly recommended for antiques, classics, or exotic vehicles that may have limited ground clearance.
Your vehicle will only be driven on to and off of the Car Carrier. Therefore, only a 1⁄4 tank of gas is needed for shipment.
The Car Carrier will get as close to your front door as possible, as long as it does not compromise the cargo and/or your vehicle. If the pickup/destination address is on a main road with no overhanging trees or low bridges, and the streets leading to the address can accommodate trucks of 75 to 80 feet long, then the carrier will pickup/deliver your vehicle to/from your door. If the Car Carrier cannot access the area, the driver may suggest meeting at a local shopping center with ample space to load/unload your vehicle. Otherwise, a local truck is dispatched to your desired location. We have a terminal/local service network of over 100 locations throughout the US.
Yes, we request that you, or a designated agent, be present upon pickup and delivery of your vehicle. An inspection report is performed and a contract bill of lading must be signed at the time of pickup and delivery. At the time of delivery you, or a designated agent, must thoroughly inspect the vehicle. If there is any damage it must be noted on the delivery receipt at the time of delivery. Claims will not be honored after the fact.
Our standard transit is up to 16 days from coast to coast and up to 14 days from coast to Midwest. Your vehicle will be transported on a Car Carrier along with other vehicles being delivered to other destinations. Delivery times fluctuate depending on the miles between your origin and destination, the scheduling of car carriers in your area, the proximity to other cars being delivered on the same carrier, weather, and unforeseeable events such as traffic accidents and Car Carrier mechanical failure. Specialty moves that involve transporting your vehicle overseas via vessel transportation (i.e. Alaska and Hawaii) may take up to 30 days. Please keep in mind the law only allows drivers to drive 550 miles per day and they must have at least one day off per week, known as down time, to rest.
Your vehicle will be covered for the Actual Cash Value (ACV). Occurrences not covered are clearly listed on the Bill of Lading upon which your car is shipped. A vehicle inspection report is done at the time of pickup and delivery. You, or your designated agent, and the truck driver both sign this report. Any exceptions must be noted at the time of delivery and this is why we advise that you do a thorough inspection of your vehicle at the time of delivery.
No, Car Carriers are not permitted by law to transport personal belongings. The carrier must be weighed at the Department of Transportation (DOT) weigh stations. If the carrier is considered over weight, the DOT officer may ask the driver to discard any such items. By violating this federal law, they can be fined up to $10,000 per occurrence. In addition, Personal belongings are not covered by the carrier's insurance and the added weight can damage the vehicle, also not covered by the insurance. The driver will not inventory any such items and will not assume responsibility for them.
Please have a no more than a 1/4 tank of fuel, remove all personal items from your vehicle, repair any chips and/or cracks in your windows and make sure your vehicle is prepared for changing weather conditions.
Vehicles that are larger than a traditional passenger vehicle (such as mini-vans, trucks, and SUVs) are consider over height. Because of the dimensions, these vehicles take up the space of two vehicles, which results in the need for an over height fee.
